New Way To Connect

Greetings Patriot Families,

I am launching a new way to reach out to families to share news and information as it relates to Albemarle High School.  Patriot Period will be published every two to three weeks to provide some insight to what is occurring at the school.

You will find both a student section and parent section in each blog post with relevant information for all stakeholders.

I hope you have a great start to the week and I hope to see you soon.

Darah Bonham, Principal

Homecoming 2019

Wow, what a week!!!  I can’t thank Mr. Lindsay, Ms. Shrader, Ms. Sherrill, Ms. Tyson, the AHS SCA, and tons of more staff and kids for making Homecoming Week 2019 at AHS a HUGE success.

As many of you know, our main gym has been under renovation since the summer and while it has inconvenienced our sports teams and PE classes, it also caused us to reconsider our options for the homecoming dance.  After much thought it was determined that we would host the dance outside in our breezeway, weather permitting.

It’s a bit daunting to try something new like this, especially with over 1,100 students planning to attend, but the SCA and our awesome staff led by Mr. Lindsay and Ms. Shrader pulled it off.

I appreciate everyone’s involvement in homecoming this year and hope our students enjoyed the experience.

ShoutOut to Ms. Fay Cunningham

Strings Recognition

The AHS String Trio applied, auditioned, and has been selected to perform at the VMEA Professional Development Conference in November.  Their audition recording was selected among many submitted across the commonwealth.

12th Grade English

Mrs. Burtram’s DE English Class participated in a project/passion based learning activity in order to analyze the themes and imagery in Beowulf. Students rapped, created sims, composed beats, drew pictures, and more in order to demonstrate their learning to their peers. Because both DE English and English 12AA read Beowulf, Ms. Doan’s English 12AA students were able to come and learn about the themes and imagery by participating in a gallery walk where the DE students presented the information in the creative styles mentioned above. Students enjoyed showcasing their products, and their peers enjoyed going deeper in the text by exploring the projects and presentations.

Congrats to Dr. Carlock

Dr. Rusty Carlock, AHS teacher,  has been selected to serve on the Development Committee for Virginia’s African American History Elective Course.  This committee will be responsible for developing learning objectives, competencies, content and assessments to provide a foundation of knowledge and understanding of African American history. It is anticipated that the elective course will be available virtually to students by the fall of 2020.   What a great recognition for Dr. Carlock.
